As the plane made its final descent into Canberra International Airport, Ari closed her eyes and leaned back in her seat, an image of Flo’s strained face dominating her thoughts. She’d done her best that morning to keep the conversation civil, but her suppressed anger had manifested into a dull headache. She was trying very hard to change her thought pattern. She wasn’t here to waste more energy on Flo. She was here to get some answers. She ran through a mental checklist of what she needed to do once she’d picked up the rental car and driven to her mother’s. The search of the house was the priority and likely to provide the most information. She’d already rung her mother’s workplace and organised a meeting for the next morning. She also wanted to speak to the neighbours and find out from them what they believed her mother’s situation to be.

It was a strange feeling turning the key in her mother’s front door an hour later. Not that she’d been here many times, but it felt like trespassing, particularly with the knowledge that this was a house her mother supposedly shared with Scott Cohen.

She let herself in and was faced with a console table housing an array of photos. Seeing her mother with a man she assumed was Scott was jarring. There was part of her that still hoped to find out this was all a big mistake or a con like her father was clinging to.

Ari left her bag by the front door and walked from room to room, surprised at how homely the house was. When she’d last visited, it’d seemed rather bare. Her mother preferred a minimalist existence, so she hadn’t done too much in the way of making it comfortable. It had the necessary basics, which, to be fair, were still lovely but lacked the cosiness that the photos, artwork and even cushions seemed to create. Perhaps Scott’s influence was more prevalent when her mother wasn’t hiding his existence.

She entered the master bedroom, spying reading glasses and books piled high on one of the bedside tables. The other side only had one book. That would be her mother’s side. She was strict about finishing one book or project before moving on to another. Julia had insisted Mike do the same and only have one book on the go. Perhaps Scott had more backbone than her father when it came to saying no. She stepped into the walk-in wardrobe and stopped. If her father wanted evidence that her mother was living with a man, it was staring her right in the face. One side of the wardrobe was lined with her mother’s clothes, neatly arranged in a similar fashion to her clothes at home. The other was similarly orderly. Men’s shirts, jackets, pants and shoes.

She moved into the en suite. It was almost identical to the en suite in her parents’ house. Her mother’s creams and lotions were prominently displayed on a shelf above the sink. Her
